Well, belated "monthsary" at least! I finally got my computer sorted out after its five-day incubation at Uncle Tommy's (my computer uncle). Apparently my modem just got post-installation withdrawal symptoms from my new Bluetooth port, fearing that my attention will be divided between it and the aforementioned techie toy addition (and so far, my modem's right).

So anyway, I wish to celebrate July 16th, the day that marks my first month at 3M Philippines, with an acrostic poem:

Well, I don't know if the grass is greener on this side, but I'm definitely sure that the grass is GREEN on this side! (and I'm a lone violet bud in a sea of green grass haha how poetic!)

Ma'am Jenny of Shell just called a few minutes ago offering me a job at Shell. It's another position (Contacts and Procurement) and it's f-r-i-g-g-i-n seven days late! I just wish she had called me up before I started work at 3M.

Don't get me wrong; I have no qualms about working at 3M. The people there are great and work is (so far) not taking a toll on my mental health.

First Day of Work

Just had mine today, and it was so fun that I was only able to come home at 10:30 in the evening!

Like college, first day was orientation day, but everyone else including Ma’am Ched (who’s like my mommy at work) seems to be preoccupied enough with tons of work to do that I only had an informal one. She told me that I’ll just be having the formal one in July, when the tons of work eventually trickle down to more manageable ounces and pounds.

Ma’am Ched also told me that for the first quarter of my training, I'll be working under the Marketing head-honcho of the Industrial Group. His name is Sir Reggie and he basically handles the 3M abrasives (i.e. 3M sandpaper - yup, didn't know they had one), the 3M display and graphics products, security products (i.e. the orangey reflective material usually found on MMDA throwbacks), and other Industrial Market stuff. Sorry, no Post-It designing for me yet for the first three months!

Unfortunately, because busy nga lahat ng tao dun, I wasn't able to meet Sir Reggie today, so I decided to help out in HR instead. Wahoo, HR for a day (or two) before I get expatriated two floors higher (‘coz HR's on the 18th floor and Marketing's on the 20th hehe).

Anyway, so for my first ever task, I was asked to type and print some Regret Letters (i.e. politically correct term for “Rejection Letters” - yup, companies seem to want to sound less cruel but honestly, the wording aaaain't helping) by Miss Chiqui, who is one of Ma'am Ched's minions and my first friend at 3M.

Then we had lunch at the cafeteria of this adjacent building called the BPI Buendia Tower because according to Miss Chiqui, and according to my prior experience as well, the food at our very own Equitable-PCI Tower 2 is somewhat “unforgettable-slash-regrettable”, which when combined I think means nakakasawa. Yup, I know I’m still a virgin and all in terms of eating at Tower 2’s cafeteria but at least my taste-buds can attest that Equitable-PCI Tower 2 food doesn’t stray far from Ateneo caf food.

After lunch, I got to do some more HR stuff, and this time a rather guilt-provoking task. Well, I got to sort out HR files, and part of them was to assist in short-listing applicants whether they… to put it bluntly, got it or not. But that is given a set of criteria of course. Mind you, after handling the task, I can definitely say that HR is not a guilt-free job. Oh well, at least the upside is that those whom I’ve rejected (sounds braggy but hey, just telling the truth) won’t come and hunt me down.

Then I helped photocopy the Six-Sigma (not enough energy to discuss what Six-Sigma is, basta it has nothing to do with Stat) newsletter and then after that I assisted in putting up some visual aids for the Corporate Rewards ek-ek programme due this Tuesday.

With all these, I didn’t realize that 5pm was almost there. We had a break, and Ma’am Elenette (the goddess of all 3M administrative assistants, who’s been working there for 30 years already) treated us with two waffles each. Bait! Tapos kuwentuhan with my office-mates (this was the time when I graduated from my coy state so medyo wala nang hiya-hiya by this time) and then when I thought that I’m already calling it a day, biglang nagkayayaan manood ng Batman Begins! Haha and then yun we watched the movie at Quad 1 over dinner and we finished at around 9:45pm. So yun, it was only able to come home at 10:30 in the evening! Plus, I got to take home some 3M freebies like Post-Its and Scotch Magic Tape hehe wahoo!

Looking forward to even more adventures tomorrow.

The time I'm unemployed,

So this is the first installment of my poem-log promise. I wrote this back in 2003 for Celadon's first-ever CD Yearbook, when JLo was VP Comm back then. (Hehe had to recycle this one because it's obviously hard to make a decent new poem in such short time).
The poem is basically a play on imagery, since you can pretty much nuance one particular shape in almost all lines of the poem, hence the title "Circle". The poem was also inspired by my personal belief that life is very much like a "wheel of fortune," where luck and adversity take turns in determining what happens in a person's life. Hope you enjoyed the poem! Hehe more to come soon, should a hefty amount of inspiration strike me.

Dear Journal,

After some tweaks and tricks, I finally managed to transform my 2-column blog into a 3-column one. At least now the leftbar and the rightbar are shorter than the middle content (unlike the previous layout, where the sidebar was wayyy way longer than the content part). Hehe who can blame me? I'm more interested in web-design aspect of my blog rather than its journalism side!

Yup, weird me.

Actually come to think of it, now that I've accomplished furnishing my blog with three columns, I feel I need to focus my attention to the content of my blog. (Rant: I'm not satisfied with the outcome though, and there are still some points for improvement with the blog like placing a footer, minimizing the cluttered effect of the three columns, and so on, but anyway...). Anyway, it's been a while since I've posted a decent update here (not some StarWars Jedi-wannabe online survey), but it seems I'm always lazy to recount my life on a regular basis while simultaneously transcribing it here.

*** Okay before I even border to the thought of not updating my blog about myself just to prove what I just said, here's a quick recap of my life thus far: Hmm.. just got rejected by Shell after undergoing the Shell Recruitment Day (aka SRD, the penultimate level where you slug it out with the other candidates to get the coveted job offer). Just to give you a picture of the agony, out of an estimated 60+ thousand people who applied to Shell, only 9 of us were chosen to undergo the SRD. And, at the end of the day, only 3 were offered the job, and I wasn't one of them.

According to Ma'am Jenny Tio (she's the cool Shell Recruitment Manager, God bless her), my insights lacked depth daw. Boo. Sayang, but at least I learned a lot from the experience. Wow, Unilever Business Week memories are all coming back to me now! Guess that means I'm back to square one. Hayy, that also means I should call Unilever and Nestle on Monday for a follow up.

The woes and wails of unemployed Atenean fresh-grads. What else is new? ***

Okay, back to my non-updating self (hehe forgive me, kinda in an M.P.D. mode here): So as I was saying, I feel a need to update this blog, but I'm not too "retrospective" in terms of giving a daily blow-by-blow of JSA, or at least on a regular basis. Hence, I've thought about making this a poet-log (hehe sagwa.. parang combination ng two anatomical parts). There are already photologs and story-logs (not sure about the term though) and I of course don't want to be a second-rate, trying hard, copycat (hehe), so I thought of making poems and publishing 'em here. However, this is not to say that I will not give occasional updates about myself; it's just from now on, the entries that will be seen in this blog will most likely be poems - haikus, sonnets, odes, songs, whatnot - all composed by me.

So there. Hope this works!

Yesterday I was invited by Father Ari to go to the informal merienda session with the Chinese Youth Delegation. Of course, Celadon was their to provide a little bit of "formality" since they are after all the "youth" delegation and of course the Chinese faculty were already past that stage. Plus, Celadon was able to provide two numbers (i.e. a dance and a song) to lessen the informality of the visit. Actually, come to think of the wacky atmosphere Celadoneans have put into the event, yes, the event was indeed "informal." Anyywayyy...

More importantly, the event made me realize how much I need to brush up on my Chinese Mandarin. It took me a good 3-5 seconds just to process the Chinese Mandarin questions asked by Laoshi Daisy and Laoshi Jane, and my replies were even half as decent. Grabe ang galing ni Trina!

Oh and I miss Alpine White. I hope Nestle rethinks about pulling it out of the chocolate industry some time soon.

Had out first Celadon alumni meeting last night.

Food was great (which is why I chose the place) but the venue was not that conducive for discussion.

Last night was "okay" (like Randy Jackson saying "okay" to AI4 contestants). Although I had fun meeting Celadon alumni (e.g. Chewee, Lem, Ivan, LiGo, Mama Nats, Oscar, etc.) again, there were some low points during the event. Like when I was left alone hosting the alumni's thoughts about initiating the association (because Clarence had to leave early, and Sir Wilson only supported me verbally by saying "ya gao ya gao" for the nth time), I can say that they were really shy to participate that time and I had to curtail the agenda.

At least we were able to "formally form" the Celadon Alumni Association.

Today was fun. Although I wasn't able to wake up early and play badminton with my Badminton Club folks (Zo, Mic, Cla, Di, Fuzz, etc.), at least I was able to talk with my Comm babies Ginnii and Justin over lunch at KFC about managing the Department next sem. 'Twas super fun hearing out all their plans for next year, and it was nice sharing some of my concerns and suggestions to them as well. Gosh I'm proud of my babies! Haha they've already grown. **happy daddy**

Okay so this happened again over YM (Yahoo and Privacy, yeah right), where I was asked a confirmation from this "tracee_wee" person. I, having a previous encounter with a creepy fan, did not add her/him/the-hell-do-I-know to my list. I dropped a message first to her, suspecting she might be the Tracy I know from ASLA. Days went with no reply from her until just now (at about 7:24pm):

Celadon Night last night was M-A-G-I-C-A-L-!

The food was great, the place was great, and the company, even greater.

It's really hard to move on and leave Celadon to the next EB. Nonetheless, I give my full confidence that the next EB will put Celadon to even greater heights next year.

Wow, as of today I'm already a Celadon alumni! (Cool, but I feel weird!)

Guess I just have to enjoy organizing Celadon projects while it lasts, with the Celadon Farewell EvSem on March 28-29!

Wow it's been a while since my last post!

Just came from Toast (Blue Roast 2005), and it was S-P-E-C-T-A-C-U-L-A-R-!-!-!

Although I wasn't too keen on the whole band thing, I commend the core for the well-prepared programme, the excellent company, and the great fireworks. What a way to cap college life!

I'll surely miss Ateneo days.

Perhaps Laoshi Francisco "Kit" Navarro, M.D. (my Traditional Chinese Medicine teacher and Celadon moderator) is right after all. People who go to Ateneo find it hard leaving their alma mater.

1st Bad Trip: Early Ph103 Orals
First off, I woke up late because my biological clock is going haywire lately. I was supposed to sign up for Ph103 Orals at 1030am but arrived school at 11am. I was still on time because sign ups were 'til 12nn. But lo and behold, when I saw the sign up sheet, only slots for this coming Saturday (Feb 19) and Sunday (Feb 20) are available and the slots for Monday (Feb 21) to the Saturday after this (Feb 26) were already filled up.

2nd Bad Trip: Useless Th151 Bonus Quiz
The quiz was worth 20 points, which is to be divided into two quizzes (i.e. two 10-point quizzes). I got a 15 over 20, which means a perfect 10/10 and then a 5/10 when separated. There were 4 numbers in this quiz worth 5 points per number, and yes, I got 3 out of 4 numbers correct. But what really pisses me off is why the checker, whom I exchanged papers with, did not consider my answer in number 3 and marked it wrong, even if my answer is synonymous to that of the book. To add insult to injury, that was the same case in my answer to number 2, which even if the word "detrimental" (instead of "harmful") was used, he still considered and checked. So there, I wasn't able to cancel off my lowest quiz (7/10) because a 5/10 bonus quiz won't do much of a miracle. I wish I had exchanged papers with Ralph instead. At least he'd be more "humane" in considering that number. After that experience, I can safely say now that he (the checker) really needs to improve on his social skills, and I am sick and tired of defending him everytime someone tells bad things about him.

3rd Bad Trip: Celadon Re-accredited for only 2 years
Actually what makes me sad is the mere fact that all of the recommendations that were written in the re-accreditation results given by OSA were already clarified during the defense itself, and I find it odd for them saying that we failed to answer the simplest of all simple questions as "What is the organization's business?" As a matter of fact, I don't see the difference of this with the organization's VMO. I can go along and answer all the comments and all the "you-should-haves" but that deserves a separate post altogether. As a matter of fact, with both pride and humility, I believe that given all of Celadon's accomplishments and improvements for the school years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, we should have been re-accredited for 3 years.

Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

The Celadon Room was super congested a while ago but it was super fun! Hehe kung saan nga talaga ang libre, nandun lahat. Even Dr. Navarro, our Celadon moderator, was able to attend the party.

But after the party comes the worry. All the teachers are hurrying up with their lectures for our finals. I guess cramming seems to transcend all academic classes.

Last hurrah for Celadon though (i.e. Alumni Homecoming), and we're all off to Celadon Night.

Batch Reunion Today

Just had my high school batch reunion aka Yearbook Signing Dinner at Dencio's Annapolis today. A quite impressive lot went to the dinner and I am happy that the Dinner was an indication that our batch is united after all.

I want to organize a grand batch reunion some time, perhaps in two years or so. But for now, I have to find a job first hehe.

Yup, and now for the worse.

An all-time high from LS/COA Awards can most certainly lead to an all-time low during today's Oriental Splendor. If Celadon's life were a conic-section graph, this has to be it's absolute minimum.

Celadon Week was delayed today because the setting up of booths took forever. Plus, although we had contingency plans for the water (i.e. when it rains), we did not foresee the wind.

Actually, we were able to think of a way to prevent the tents from getting blown by the wind, and that is: "Kapit!"

Thankfully, my smart-ass managers (bless them) thought of a way to reinforce the tents by putting pegs on their corners. At least this kept the tents from going all "Marilyn Monroe" on us.

Set-up ended at 3pm. Celadon Week was eventually called off for today because there is only so much to do within one-and-a-half hours.

Tired, torn, and literally bruised (and lacerated) because my left index and middle fingers were chomped by the two folding sides of a folding table, I scanned the entire area of SEC Field, and noticed that a different kind of splendor stood there. Even if Celadon Week did not push through today, there is a certain inexplicable glory behind the empty tents and the ghost-town atmosphere, and from what I remember it's called teamwork and unity.

Guess it's not an all-time low after all... I hope all bodes well for the rest of Celadon Week though.

Slept at about 6am today. Woke up at 830am. Feeling the whiplash of Senior year's dusk already.

Re-accreditation defense went well a while ago. They're asked about the "Ignatianism" of the org just because it got the lowest score in the YESSUR report conducted last time. Yeah, apparently an average of "3" is not good enough, even if 3 rates "Good" in the conversion weights. Nonetheless, I'm confident that I defended Celadon well and I hope all bodes well for the org. I hope I come across the number "3" again when I read the Results Letter they'll be giving out within two weeks.

Parco class was fine. I just have to dread her looming 2nd Long Test on Monday.

IMC class went well too. I had a WAC and I think I did pretty well.

Drove Enzo home.

Went home.

Ate a bit.

I'm tired.

Wrote this update. (Sleepy)

Will sleep for a while.

I'm so happy today.

Celadon bagged the COA Awards' Most Outstanding Organization, and I was awarded as Most Outstanding Leader (really honored, and really happy!)

Celadon also ended up as a finalist in the LS Awards for Service and Excellence as Most Outstanding Student Group, plus 4 other Project Distinctions: Aling Lahi and Gratia 2004 as finalists for LS Awards' Most Outstanding Project, as well as Chinoy and Gratia 2004 as finalists for COA Awards' Best Project. (**Darn, if I could just place that YM Emoticon that yells "Oh Yeah!" here!**)

Had a great dinner too: Great food coupled with great company on a starlit SEC Field, wow.

Tonight was also a milestone for my HS batch - we had our first batch YM Conference! Hehe although only about 20% of the batch were in the conference, it still evoked a spirit of unity in the batch, kahit medyo watak-watak kami hehe. I think this conference is a start for our batch to get more united. Really excited to see them again on Feb 12 for our reunion.

Ngayon kasing President na ako, although happy ako kapag may mga projects na sobrang successful, parang not as felicitous yung effect sa akin dahil hindi ako ang mismong nagpagod mag-coordinate for that project like what I used to do when I was VP.

More Theorems (err… Observations!)

Upon the recent “publication” of this blog, many people made mention of my “theorem” post. So here’s another one of the mathematical discoveries I failed to include in that post. Hehe enjoy sa mga readers ko haha!

My grade school Math teacher (forgot what grade that was) used to teach us that to test if a certain number is divisible by 3, you have to sum up the digits of that given number and if it sums up to a multiple of 3, then that number is divisible by 3. Thus, the number 87, whose digits sum up to 15, is divisible by 3. Similarly, the number 3,699,363,396 (adding up to 57, whose digits further add up to 12) is divisible by 3.

But why add if you can cancel?

Yes, I got this observation once again from my tricycle travels, jeepney journeys, and with the latest addition to the commuter’s collection: MRT misadventures. It sort of sprang out from the plate number additions I’m doing even until now. Anyway, this is just another method of divisibility test. The one our grade school teachers taught us is what I call the “addition method.” This, my brainchild (mwahahaha), is the “cancellation method” of testing the divisibility of numbers by 3.

Yup, instead of adding up the individual digits of 3,699,363,396, why not cancel all the digits that are already divisible by 3, which in this case is every single digit of the number: 3,699,363,396 (See? No need to add up the digits and waste neuron activity! You actually know that the number is divisible by 3 because every single digit is “duh-visible” by 3)

How about 10,326,962,001? Okay using cancellation, we take out the digits that are divisible by 3: 10,326,962,001. So the digits left are 1, 2, 2, and 1. However, adding these remaining digits gives you 6, which is divisible by 3. Therefore, without adding, you can say that 10,326,962,001 is indeed divisible by 3.

So, if one of these numbers are guaranteed to be divisible by 3:
a. 1,703,696,333
b. 2,820,039,615
c. 3,333,333,331
You would now know quicker.

Another method I observed is the “Power of Three” method (haha okay screw the Charmed Ones just this once!), where a certain number that has three digits which are repeating can instantly be acknowledged as divisible by 3, such as three hundred and thirty-three (333), one hundred and eleven (111), and yes, the lucky 888.

This goes for 111,111 (three elevens), 123,123,123 (three 123’s), and 878,787 (three 87’s).

Apparently, this is how bored I am. No actually, this is how BAD I need a break! Catch more of my life soon… I'll catch up first on it though.

More Power

Right after asking a question to clarify an ambivalent term in our Theo141 long test, my teacher Mr. Acevedo told me he can’t go to the Gratia Night tomorrow because he has to facilitate a healing mass for his “very sick” mom. Poor Sir Acevedo, he’s actually a nice teacher.

Anyway, to end our conversation, he told me “More Power na lang sa inyo.” I obviously thanked him and wished his mother well.

This was the height of the long test and I’m supposed to be concentrating on my answers to the true-or-false questions but oddly enough, the back of my mind started scrutinizing the two words: “More Power.” It was like half of my brain was busy answering the test while the other half was analyzing how someone, who teaches that the yearning for power is sinful, wants to wish me “More Power.”

Maybe it’s more politically correct (or more Theo141-ly correct) to say “More Blessings na lang sa inyo.” Then again, maybe I’m just over-analyzing stuff. But then again again, I still prefer wishing someone “More Blessings” rather than “More Power” – there’s just this sanctity in it.

Plate Number Arithmetic

When I’m commuting to school or back home, I can hardly do anything but think. Well, I can also eat some drive-thru food, engage in a few catnaps, or talk to a friend who is also commuting, but most of the time I can only reflect on something. However, whenever I’m not thinking of anything, or whenever I simply choose not to think of anything that will just make me worry about it, I usually add the three digits of the plate numbers of nearby vehicles that pass ours by. Naturally, the sum of the three digits should not be less than 3, nor should it be higher than 27. But here’s a neat trick I discovered out of boredom during my tricycle travels. Let me call it Jules’s Theorem (bwahahaha!):

Anyway, suppose you have a plate number with numbers taking the form of:

A B C . 9 1 X, where X is any number from 0 to 9 (duh, hehe)

If you wish to add the numbers up, just remove the number 9 and voila! You get the sum of the three digits, which is 1 X.

For example, if my plate reads WCS.912, the sum of the digits of my plate number is 12 (I just removed the 9) because 9 + 1 + 2 = 12. Similarly, for a plate that reads XFJ.918, just remove the 9 and you get 18 as the sum of the digits of that plate.

Hehe imagine what boredom can do.
